Five golden hoops is a show concept created by world champion hoop dancer Dallas Arcand and local Sylix artist Krystal Withakay in the spirit of the holiday season. Traditionally for generations after Canada became a country this time of year was only known for Christmas celebratory type of events and themes. Since we are in the era of reconciliation it is most appropriate for Canadians to consider Indigenous celebrations such as winter solstice, which is a culturally connected way of acknowledging the changing of the seasonal cycles.

The term and concept of ‘Five Golden Hoops’ is borrowed from the song ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ in good fun and good faith. Many Indigenous communities across Turtle Island (North America) actively celebrate Christmas even though the holiday hasn’t always been a part of Indigenous cultures and ancestral ways. However, we would still like to respect and honour that Canadian traditional holiday, but with a twist of Indigenous flavour.

Our show ‘Five Golden Hoops’ is a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season by sharing our Indigenous songs, stories, talents, culture, and dancing. Featuring some of the finest talent within the heart of the Sylix (Okanakan) traditional territory. Hosted by the wonderful Krystal Withakay and Canada’s best Indigenous hoop dancer and multidisciplinary artist Dallas Arcand. In addition, our show will feature Meadow Arcand-Squakin (ladies fancy shawl dancer), and some special invited guest performers to accompany the performance and cast.
